PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

wintergatelegal.com presents itself as the "National Crypto Helpline — Recover Funds Lost to Crypto Fraud" under a name styled like a law firm. PhishDestroy classifies it as an impersonation phishing page. It targets people who have already been scammed, offering them a path back to their money. We first flagged it on 2026-09-17, and the site was still online with its content live on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

This is a recovery scam. A victim searching for help after a theft finds what looks like an official helpline or legal service and is told their funds can be traced and returned. The catch usually follows quickly: an upfront retainer, a "tracing fee", taxes or release charges, sometimes paid in crypto. These schemes often also ask for identity documents, exchange logins or wallet seed phrases. The victim loses money a second time, and anything they hand over can be used for further theft or identity fraud.

Evidence

Nine of 91 engines on VirusTotal flagged the domain as of 2026-09-29, including ESET, Kaspersky, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, CRDF, Gridinsoft, alphaMountain.ai and Bfore.Ai PreCrime. That count is modest, but several established vendors agree. Spamhaus lists it in its domain blocklist as phishing (DBL_PHISH), and it is blocked by MetaMask and SEAL alongside PhishDestroy. Four AlienVault OTX threat pulses reference it, so other researchers are tracking it as well.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-05 through Spaceship, Inc., just 12 days before we detected it. A brand-new domain posing as an established national helpline is a strong red flag on its own. It is hosted on DigitalOcean, LLC servers in the US and uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the padlock in the browser says nothing about whether the service is legitimate.

What to do

If you contacted this site, stop all payments. Real recovery services and authorities do not demand upfront fees to return stolen crypto. If you already paid by card or bank transfer, contact your bank immediately to dispute it. Report the original theft and this contact to your police and national fraud reporting body. If you shared ID documents, watch for identity misuse. If you gave out a seed phrase or exchange login, move your remaining funds to a new wallet and change passwords and 2FA. Uninstall any remote-access software they had you install. Defenders should block the domain and its DBL_PHISH listing at mail and web gateways, and warn fraud-victim support channels about fake helpline recovery offers.
