How the scam works
This is a recovery scam, a second-wave fraud aimed at people who have already lost money. Victims who search for help find a professional-looking legal or helpline front that promises to trace and return their stolen crypto. The operators then ask for upfront payments, described as case fees, legal costs, tracing charges or taxes. They may also request ID documents, exchange logins or wallet seed phrases. No funds are ever recovered, so the victim loses money a second time and hands over personal data that can be used for further targeting.
Evidence
Seven of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain as of 2026-09-29: alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, Kaspersky and SOCRadar. That count is modest, but these are independent vendors reaching the same verdict. MetaMask and SEAL list the domain alongside PhishDestroy, so wallet users are warned at the source. Four AlienVault OTX threat pulses also reference it, which means other researchers are tracking this operation.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered through Spaceship, Inc. on 2026-09-09, only eight days before PhishDestroy detected it. That short gap suggests it was set up specifically for this campaign rather than repurposed from a real firm. The site runs on DigitalOcean, LLC servers in the US. Its free Let's Encrypt certificate gives it a padlock icon, but that proves nothing about who runs it.
What to do
Do not pay any fee to this site, and stop all contact if you have already engaged. Legitimate recovery does not require upfront crypto payments. If you sent money, report it to your bank or payment provider and to national fraud authorities, and keep all messages and transaction IDs. If you shared a seed phrase, move your remaining assets to a new wallet immediately. If you shared exchange credentials, change those passwords and reset 2FA, and watch for identity misuse if you uploaded ID documents. Defenders should block the domain and warn users who report crypto losses that unsolicited "recovery" offers are a common follow-up scam.
