FAQ

How are words, sentences and reading time counted?

Words are runs of characters between spaces or line breaks, and a sentence is any piece of text that ends in a full stop, exclamation mark or question mark, so abbreviations such as "e.g." add extra sentences. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute.

Why can the counts differ from my word processor?

Characters are counted as JavaScript string length, so line breaks count and an emoji usually counts as 2. Unique words are compared in lowercase but with punctuation attached, so "dog" and "dog." count as two different words.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The statistics are computed by JavaScript in this page as you type; the text is not uploaded or stored.
