FAQ

Which characters are replaced?

‘ ’ ‚ ‹ › become ', “ ” „ « » become ", an en dash becomes -, an em dash becomes -- and … becomes three dots. Other characters, such as non-breaking spaces or prime marks, are left unchanged.

How reliable is Convert to smart?

It works on pairs: text between two straight double quotes gets “ ” and text between two single quotes gets ‘ ’. Apostrophes are paired the same way, so words like it's and don't can end up with the wrong marks; check the result. It also turns ... into … and -- into —.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The replacements are plain text substitutions done in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
