PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

updater-wechat.com is a credential phishing site. The domain name suggests a WeChat updater, but the page itself is titled "AKIRA CHAT - Login" and presents a chat sign-in form. Its target is anyone who arrives expecting to update or log into a messaging account. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-09-19, and it was still online serving live content on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

The domain borrows the familiar WeChat name and frames itself as an update, which gives the victim a reason to sign in again. The page then shows the AKIRA CHAT login form. Anything typed into it, such as a username, phone number, password or verification code, goes to the operators rather than to a real service. With those credentials they can take over the account, read private conversations, impersonate the owner to contacts, or try the same password on other services. The page title names AKIRA CHAT, while we classify the site as credential phishing based on its WeChat-styled domain and login-harvesting function.

Evidence

On 2026-09-29, 6 of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar and Webroot. That is a small share of engines, so many security products may still let the page load. Beyond PhishDestroy, the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists list it. Those are crypto-focused lists, which suggests the operators also reach wallet users. Two AlienVault OTX threat pulses reference the domain.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered through Namecheap on 2025-12-23, about nine months before PhishDestroy detected it. That gap may mean the domain sat unused or ran quietly for a long time before it was caught. The site is hosted on the QWINS LTD network in Finland.

What to do

If you entered a password on this page, change it right away on the genuine service and on any other account that uses the same password. Turn on two-factor authentication, and if you also typed a verification code, sign out all active sessions from the real app's security settings. Warn your contacts that messages from your account may not be from you, and check for unfamiliar logins or changed recovery details. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and search mail and chat logs for links to it. Treat any "update your chat app" lure that leads to a web login form as hostile.
