PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

sofware-update-bc.cc is an impersonation phishing domain whose misspelled name, "sofware-update", is built to pass as a legitimate software or wallet update notice. Its listing on the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists places it in the crypto ecosystem, where fake updates are a common lure for wallet users. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-09-14. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still alive and its content resolved through a redirect.

How the scam works

Fake-update phishing tells visitors their wallet or software is outdated and pushes them to "update" through the attacker's page. That step usually asks for a recovery phrase or private key, a wallet connection, or a download. Whichever one the victim completes gives the operator control of the wallet or the device. The page title currently reads "sofware-update-bc.cc is registered at Namecheap", a registrar holding message, while we classify the domain as impersonation phishing.

Evidence

On 2026-09-24, VirusTotal showed 7 of 89 engines flagging the domain: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar and VIPRE. That count is modest, so some security tools will still let it through. The stronger signals come from elsewhere. Spamhaus lists it in its DBL as a phishing domain, MetaMask and SEAL block it alongside PhishDestroy, and it appears in 4 AlienVault OTX threat pulses.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2025-11-20 through NAMECHEAP INC, almost ten months before PhishDestroy detected it. A gap that long fits a domain kept quiet or reused before it was turned against victims. It resolves to Namecheap, Inc. hosting in the US. The registrar holding title and the redirect suggest the visible content can change at any moment, so a harmless-looking page today does not make the domain safe tomorrow.

What to do

If you typed a recovery phrase or private key on this site, treat that wallet as compromised. Move any remaining funds to a new wallet created on a clean device. If you connected a wallet, revoke the approvals granted during that session. If you downloaded an "update", don't run it, and scan the machine. Only update wallets through their official app stores or built-in updaters. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and add it to wallet-protection and email filtering lists.
