PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

privnote.live is an impersonation phishing page that copies Privnote, the service for sending notes that self-destruct after reading. Its page title reproduces the real slogan, "Privnote - Send notes that will self-destruct after being read", so it looks like the genuine tool to anyone who lands on it. The site is aimed at people who use one-time notes to pass sensitive material, including passwords, recovery phrases and crypto wallet addresses. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-19, and it was still online with live content as of 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

Fake Privnote clones exploit trust in a privacy brand. A victim writes a note on the lookalike site and shares the link, believing the content will be destroyed after reading. The operator controls the page, so anything typed into it can be captured, and in crypto-focused versions of this scheme a wallet address inside a note can be swapped for the attacker's, so the recipient sends funds to the wrong wallet. The loss is either the secret itself, such as a password or seed phrase, or the payment redirected through the altered note.

Evidence

On 2026-09-29, 11 of 91 VirusTotal engines classified the domain as malicious, including alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, CyRadar, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, G-Data and Gridinsoft. That is a minority of engines, but the list combines major commercial vendors and specialist feeds. The crypto-security blocklists of MetaMask and SEAL list it alongside PhishDestroy, which points to a threat against wallet users. It also appears in three AlienVault OTX threat pulses.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered through Spaceship, Inc. on 2026-05-20, about four months before PhishDestroy detected it. The gap suggests the domain sat ready, or ran quietly, before it drew attention. Traffic passes through Cloudflare, Inc. on an address geolocated to Canada, which hides the real origin server behind the proxy network.

What to do

If you created or opened a note on privnote.live, treat everything in it as exposed. Change any password it contained and enable two-factor authentication on that account. If it held a seed phrase or private key, move your funds to a new wallet immediately. Before sending crypto to an address you received through a self-destructing note, confirm it with the sender over a separate channel. Security teams should block the domain, search proxy and DNS logs for visits, and warn staff that Privnote lookalikes exist.
