PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

maingateauctions.com presented itself as "MainGate Auctions," a seller of bank-repossessed vehicles, boats and equipment. It was aimed at bargain hunters looking for cheap repo cars and machinery. PhishDestroy classifies it as an impersonation phishing page and first flagged it on 2026-09-05. The site has been offline since 2026-09-15, its DNS no longer resolves, and it was still down when last checked on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

Fake repossession auctions list vehicles, boats or equipment at prices well below market value and invite visitors to bid or reserve a lot. The buyer is then asked to pay a deposit, the full price or a "transport" or "escrow" fee, usually by wire transfer or another payment that is hard to reverse. Victims are often also asked for ID documents, addresses and banking details. Nothing is ever delivered, so the victim loses the money they sent and may have exposed personal data that can be reused for fraud.

Evidence

On 2026-09-17, three of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain as malicious: CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker and SOCRadar. That is a low count, so most security tools would not have warned a visitor during the short time the site was live. The domain appears in eight AlienVault OTX threat pulses, which shows other researchers tracked it independently. Among blocklists, it is listed by PhishDestroy.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered through NameCheap, Inc. on 2026-07-10, about eight weeks before PhishDestroy detected it. That gap fits a site built and populated with fake listings before it was promoted to buyers. It was hosted in the US on the HIVELOCITY, Inc. network. The site stayed up for only about ten days after detection before going dark.

What to do

If you paid MainGate Auctions a deposit, bid payment or shipping fee, contact your bank or payment provider right away and ask for a recall or chargeback. Report the fraud to your national consumer protection or cybercrime authority, and keep any invoices, emails and transfer receipts. If you sent ID scans or banking details, watch your accounts, consider a credit freeze, and treat any follow-up "refund" or "recovery" offer as a second scam. Defenders should block the domain and use it as a pattern indicator for lookalike repo-auction sites, which tend to come back under new names.
