Overview

giftcardscheck.online presents itself as a gift card balance checker. Its page title reads "Gift Card Checker – Header". PhishDestroy classifies it as an impersonation phishing page aimed at people holding gift cards who want a quick way to confirm what is left on them. We first flagged the domain on 2026-10-07, and as of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving its content.

How the scam works

Fake balance checkers rely on a simple trick. The visitor types in the card number and the PIN or security code, expecting to see a balance. Those two values are everything needed to spend a gift card, so whoever runs the page can redeem or resell the value almost immediately, usually before the owner notices. Unlike a stolen bank card, a drained gift card is rarely refunded, which makes the loss close to permanent.

Evidence

VirusTotal shows 5 of 92 engines flagging the domain as of 2026-10-19: alphaMountain.ai, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft and SOCRadar. That is modest coverage, so many browsers and security tools will still load the page without a warning. Spamhaus separately lists the domain in its DBL under the spam category, which ties it to abusive activity beyond our own blocklist entry.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2025-12-27 through Global Domain Group LLC, more than nine months before we detected it. That gap suggests it was either kept idle or ran unnoticed for a long stretch. It resolves to 163.61.188.9 on the NEW DHAKA HARDWARE network, located in the US. Its Let's Encrypt certificate gives it a browser padlock, but the padlock only means the connection is encrypted and says nothing about whether the site is honest.

What to do

If you entered a card number and PIN here, contact the retailer or issuer behind that card right away and ask them to freeze it. Have your purchase receipt or card packaging ready, because issuers often need proof of purchase before they can act. If you paid any fee or entered bank card details, call your bank to dispute the charge and replace the card. Defenders should block the domain and its IP at DNS and proxy level and add it to phishing filters, since current vendor detection is thin.
