PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

gift-community.beer was an impersonation phishing page that copied Steam and presented itself as "Steam Gift Activation". It targeted Steam users with the promise of a free gift waiting to be claimed. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-12. The site has been offline since 2026-09-14, and on 2026-10-19 its domain no longer resolved in DNS.

How the scam works

Lures like this usually arrive as a message from a friend or stranger saying a game or gift card is ready to redeem. The "activation" page then asks the visitor to sign in with their Steam account, and sometimes to enter a Steam Guard code as well. Anything typed there goes straight to the operators, who use it to take over the account. With access they can strip the inventory, trade away skins, change the recovery details, and send the same gift lure to everyone on the victim's friends list.

Evidence

Six of 89 VirusTotal engines marked the domain malicious when it was checked on 2026-09-12: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Fortinet, Kaspersky, LevelBlue and SOCRadar. That is a modest count, but it came from several unrelated vendors within days of the domain going live. urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict and specifically detected Steam branding on the page. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL as spam, and it is on the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-08 through Global Domain Group LLC. It was being flagged four days later and was dead within six, which is a typical lifespan for a throwaway phishing domain. It was hosted on the FEMO IT SOLUTIONS LIMITED network in Germany. It used a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so a padlock in the browser said nothing about whether the page was legitimate.

What to do

If you signed in on this page, change your Steam password right away from the official client. Then deauthorize all other devices, confirm Steam Guard is still tied to your own phone or email, and revoke any Steam Web API key you did not create yourself. Review pending and recent trade offers, and change the password on your email account if it shares that password. Warn your friends that any gift message sent from your account was not you. Defenders should block the domain and watch for other Steam gift activation lures on newly registered domains.
