PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

elfcosmetics-australia.com is an impersonation phishing site posing as the Australian storefront of e.l.f. Cosmetics. Its page title read "e.l.f. Cosmetics Australia | Affordable Makeup and Skincare Products", which is aimed at bargain-hunting beauty shoppers searching for the brand locally. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-08-28. The site has been offline since 2026-09-07, and its DNS was still inactive when last checked on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

Fake brand shops like this copy a real retailer's name, product range and look, then use steep discounts to push visitors to checkout. urlscan.io specifically flagged this site as a fake shop. The checkout page collects names, delivery addresses, phone numbers and full card details. Victims typically receive nothing, or a cheap item unrelated to the order, while the payment and the card data go to the operators. The stolen card details can then be reused for further fraud.

Evidence

When VirusTotal checked the site on 2026-09-08, 11 of 89 engines flagged it. Those engines included alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, CyRadar, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, G-Data, Google Safe Browsing and Gridinsoft, which is broad agreement for a short-lived shop domain. Google Safe Browsing classified it as SOCIAL_ENGINEERING, so Chrome and other browsers that use that feed would have shown a warning. urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict. The domain also appears in four AlienVault OTX threat pulses and on the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered through TuringSign Inc. d/b/a Cosmotown. It resolved to 172.67.182.36 on Cloudflare's network, which is geolocated to Canada. That address belongs to Cloudflare's proxy layer, not to the server that actually hosted the shop, so the real origin was hidden behind it. Roughly ten days passed between PhishDestroy's first sighting and the site going dark. That short lifespan is typical of disposable fake-shop domains.

What to do

If you ordered from this site, contact your bank or card issuer right away. Report the charge as fraud, cancel the card and ask about a chargeback. Watch your statements for small test transactions, and treat follow-up emails, texts or "delivery" calls about the order as further phishing. If you created an account there, change that password anywhere else you reused it. Only buy e.l.f. products from the brand's official site or from known retailers. Defenders should block the domain and any lookalike e.l.f. regional domains, and check payment and proxy logs for traffic to it between 2026-08-28 and 2026-09-07.
