PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

americangirlplay.com is a fake online shop that borrows two Mattel identities at once. The domain name evokes the American Girl doll line, and the storefront presents itself as "Exclusive Limited-Edition Toys for Collectors | Mattel Creations." It targets collectors and gift-buying parents who expect official Mattel drops. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-10-01, and it was still online with its shop content live on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

The "limited-edition" and "collectors" framing is the hook. Scarce Mattel Creations releases sell out quickly on the official site, so a shop that appears to still have stock, often at a tempting price, pushes buyers to check out before they think twice. Shops like this typically take card or other payment details and then ship nothing, ship a cheap counterfeit, or stop responding. Victims lose the purchase price and expose their payment card and shipping details to the operators.

Evidence

urlscan.io rated the site malicious and specifically flagged it as a fake shop, which matches our classification. On VirusTotal, 6 of 91 engines flagged the domain as of 2026-10-01: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Gridinsoft, LevelBlue, Netcraft and SOCRadar. That is a minority of engines, but it is typical for a young shopfront and it comes from several unrelated vendors. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL as spam, and it appears in 2 AlienVault OTX threat pulses alongside the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-08-21 through TuringSign Inc. d/b/a Cosmotown, 41 days before we caught it. That short runway is common for fake shops built to last one sales cycle. The site is hosted in Georgia (GE), far from where an official Mattel store would run, and it uses a free automated Let's Encrypt certificate. The padlock in the browser therefore says nothing about who operates the shop.

What to do

If you paid on americangirlplay.com, contact your card issuer or bank right away to dispute the charge and request a replacement card. Watch your statements for further unauthorized charges. Save your order confirmation and any emails as evidence, and treat follow-up messages about "shipping delays" or extra fees as part of the scam. Buy Mattel Creations and American Girl products only through Mattel's own stores or established retailers. Defenders should block the domain and its hosting IP and add the name to brand-abuse watchlists for Mattel-themed lookalikes.
