Overview

steanrip.com is an impersonation phishing page that borrows Steam branding and targets PC gamers looking for free downloads. The domain is one letter off the familiar STEAMRIP name, with an "n" where the "m" should be, which is easy to miss in a search result or a shared link. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-10-07. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving content.

How the scam works

The page presents itself as "STEAMRIP » Free Pre-installed Steam Games". That title advertises a free game download portal, while our classification is phishing that impersonates Steam. Scams in this category usually turn the promise of a free game into a prompt to sign in with Steam, or into a download that is not what it claims to be. A victim can lose the Steam account itself, along with its game library, tradable inventory items, wallet balance and any saved payment methods.

Evidence

On 2026-10-15, VirusTotal showed 7 of 92 security engines flagging the domain: alphaMountain.ai, Bfore.Ai PreCrime, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar and Sophos. That count is modest, but it comes from several unrelated vendors, and some of them specialise in catching newly registered malicious domains. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL under the spam category. It also appears in 3 AlienVault OTX threat pulses, and PhishDestroy has added it to its blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-29 through NICENIC INTERNATIONAL GROUP CO., LIMITED and was flagged eight days later, a short lifespan typical of throwaway lookalike domains. Traffic runs through Cloudflare's network, with the address geolocated to Canada, so the real origin server is hidden behind the proxy. The site uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the browser padlock only means the connection is encrypted and says nothing about whether the site is legitimate.

What to do

If you signed in to Steam through this site, change your Steam password right away from the official client, turn on Steam Guard mobile authentication, and use the option to deauthorize all other devices. Then review your trade history, market listings and API keys for anything you did not create, and change the password anywhere else you reused it. If you downloaded or ran a file from the page, disconnect the machine, run a full malware scan, and change your important passwords from a different, clean device. Defenders should block steanrip.com at DNS and the proxy, watch for other Steam lookalike domains registered around the same time, and report it to Cloudflare and the registrar.
