Overview

chrome-download.com is an impersonation phishing page dressed up as a download portal for Google Chrome. Its page title reads "HOME - chrome download" to catch people searching for the browser installer. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-27. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving content.

How the scam works

Fake browser-download sites exploit a routine task: someone wants Chrome, searches for it, and lands on a lookalike domain instead of Google's own page. The "download" button on these sites typically hands over a file that is not the genuine browser. It may be a trojanized installer, bundled adware, or an info-stealer that harvests saved passwords, session cookies and browser-based crypto wallet data. Because the victim runs the file themselves, the damage starts the moment it executes. Losses can include accounts, credentials and any wallet funds reachable from the infected machine.

Evidence

On VirusTotal, 4 of 92 engines flagged the domain as of 2026-10-10: alphaMountain.ai, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft and SOCRadar. That count is modest, so most security tools will still let it through. If a crypto wallet was installed on or used from the affected computer, treat its seed phrase as exposed and move funds to a new wallet created on a clean device. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level, hunt for recent executable downloads tied to it, and report it to Cloudflare and Namecheap.
