Overview

walletconnect-airdrop.xyz is an airdrop scam that impersonates WalletConnect and targets crypto wallet users who expect free token rewards. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-09-25, three days after the domain was registered. The site went offline on 2026-09-25 and its DNS was still inactive when last checked on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

The page was titled "The WalletConnect Network: OKX Airdrop", mixing the WalletConnect and OKX names to make a fake token giveaway look official. Visitors are told they qualify for an airdrop and are prompted to connect a wallet to claim it. The kit abuses the WalletConnect pairing flow. Instead of delivering tokens, the connection requests token approvals, permit signatures or transfers that hand control of the victim's assets to the attacker. Once a victim signs, the attacker can drain tokens and NFTs without any further interaction.

Evidence

VirusTotal returned 11 detections out of 91 engines on 2026-09-25. Flagging vendors included ChainPatrol, alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, Chong Lua Dao, CyRadar, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet and G-Data. The domain is listed on the MetaMask, ScamSniffer and SEAL blocklists as well as PhishDestroy. It also appears in 2 AlienVault OTX threat pulses.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-22 through Spaceship, Inc. It was hosted at 94.154.172.39 on the IP Vendetta Inc. network in Seychelles. Its TLS certificate was issued by Let's Encrypt (YE2), a free automated certificate that shows the connection is encrypted but says nothing about whether the site is legitimate.

What to do

If you connected a wallet to this site, use a token-approval checker to revoke any allowances or permits granted around that time. Move any remaining assets to a fresh wallet if you signed anything you did not fully understand. If you entered a seed phrase, treat the wallet as compromised and transfer funds out immediately. Remember that WalletConnect does not run claim pages that require signing transactions. Defenders should block the domain and its hosting IP, and watch for lookalike airdrop domains that combine WalletConnect or OKX branding.
