tetherpay.fun poses as "TetherPay," a Tether-branded service with the tagline "Earn in USDT. Spend in INR." The pitch targets people in India who want to earn in stablecoins and cash out in rupees. Tether runs no such product, and PhishDestroy classifies the site as impersonation phishing. We first flagged it on 2026-09-13. As of 2026-10-19 the domain still responds, but its DNS no longer serves the phishing content.
How the scam works
The name and tagline borrow Tether's credibility to sell a payment or earning service that does not exist. Schemes like this usually ask visitors to sign up, deposit USDT to "activate" earnings, or hand over login details, wallet credentials or a recovery phrase in exchange for promised rupee payouts. The INR angle makes cash-outs sound simple and local, which lowers suspicion. Victims typically lose whatever they deposit, and anyone who shares a recovery phrase can have the whole wallet emptied.
Evidence
On 2026-09-21, 7 of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft, PhishFort and SOCRadar. That is a modest count, but it includes a dedicated anti-phishing vendor and several commercial web filters. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL under the phishing category, and three AlienVault OTX threat pulses reference it. PhishDestroy carries it on our blocklist.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered through HOSTINGER operations, UAB on 2026-09-11, just two days before we detected it. That short gap fits a site set up to run a quick campaign rather than a real business. It was hosted on Amazon.com, Inc. infrastructure in the United States.
What to do
If you deposited USDT or paid any "activation" or withdrawal fee to TetherPay, send nothing more. No further payment will release your funds. Keep the transaction hashes and report the loss to your local cybercrime unit. If you entered a recovery phrase, move your funds right away to a new wallet created with a fresh phrase. If you reused a password there, change it everywhere you used it and turn on two-factor authentication. Security teams should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and watch for other lookalikes built on the TetherPay name.
