PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

opensea.market is an NFT scam site posing as OpenSea, the NFT marketplace, and it targets collectors and traders who expect to buy, sell or mint NFTs there. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-08-31, two days after the domain was registered. The site has been offline since 2026-09-11, and on 2026-10-19 its DNS was still inactive.

How the scam works

The page carried the title "OpenSea" and reused the marketplace's branding so visitors would believe they were on the real platform. Fake mints and fake marketplaces like this one typically ask the visitor to connect a wallet and then present a transaction or signature request disguised as a mint, listing, offer acceptance or verification step. Signing it can grant the attacker approvals over NFTs and tokens, or transfer them directly. Victims can lose valuable NFTs, the funds paid for a mint that never existed, and any assets covered by the approvals they signed.

Evidence

A VirusTotal scan on 2026-09-02 returned 7 detections out of 91 engines. The flagging vendors were ChainPatrol, alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Ermes, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft and SOCRadar. That is a modest share of engines, but it includes ChainPatrol, a crypto-focused vendor. The domain is also listed on the PhishDestroy and SEAL blocklists and appears in 3 AlienVault OTX pulses.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-08-29 through Cloudflare, Inc. It resolved to 185.129.103.68 on the DDOS-GUARD LTD network in Russia (RU). Its TLS certificate was issued by Let's Encrypt (YR2).

What to do

If you connected a wallet to opensea.market, open a token approval checker right away and revoke any approvals or NFT permissions you granted while on the site. If you signed transactions or messages there, move your remaining NFTs and tokens to a new wallet, and do the same if you ever typed in a seed phrase, since that wallet is permanently compromised. Use OpenSea only from a bookmarked address and treat lookalike domains with suspicion. Defenders should block the domain and its IP, search proxy and DNS logs for past connections, and add similar marketplace lookalikes to their watchlists.
