How the scam works
The page title, "National Crypto Helpline — Recover Funds Lost to Crypto Fraud," sets up a classic recovery scam. A legal-sounding brand and an official-looking helpline give the operation credibility with victims who are desperate to get their money back. Schemes like this usually ask for upfront "case," "legal" or "tracing" fees, copies of ID documents, and details of the original theft. Some also push victims to share wallet access or install remote-access software. The victim loses the fees, hands over identity data that can be reused, and recovers nothing.
Evidence
On 2026-09-29, 10 of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain, including ESET, Kaspersky, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, CRDF, Gridinsoft, alphaMountain.ai and Bfore.Ai PreCrime. That is a modest count, but it includes several major vendors that detected the site independently of each other. MetaMask and SEAL also list it alongside PhishDestroy, and Spamhaus DBL tags it as phishing (DBL_PHISH). Four AlienVault OTX pulses reference the domain, which shows other researchers are tracking it too.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered through Spaceship, Inc. on 2026-09-05, only 12 days before we detected it. A new domain dressed up as an established law firm is a strong warning sign. The site is hosted on DigitalOcean, LLC in the US and uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate. The padlock in the browser therefore says nothing about who runs the site.
What to do
Do not pay any fee to this "helpline". Legitimate recovery does not require upfront payments to strangers who contacted you or whom you found online. If you already paid, contact your bank or card issuer immediately to dispute the charge. Report the payment and your original loss to the police and your national fraud reporting service. If you sent ID documents, watch for identity misuse. If you shared a seed phrase, move any remaining funds to a new wallet at once. If you installed remote-access software, remove it and change your passwords and 2FA from a clean device. Defenders should block the domain and warn fraud-support channels, because recovery scams deliberately target prior victims.
