cionbase.xyz is a phishing page that impersonated Coinbase, using a domain that swaps two letters of the real brand to catch users who mistype it or skim a link too quickly. It targeted Coinbase customers. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-15. The site has been offline since 2026-10-17, and its DNS was still inactive when we last checked on 2026-10-19.
How the scam works
Typosquats like this sit on a near-identical name and present a Coinbase-style login or wallet screen, so visitors believe they are on the genuine service. Anything typed there, including email, password, one-time codes or recovery details, goes straight to the operator, who can use it to log into the real account and move funds out. The browser tab showed only the bare title "xyz" rather than Coinbase branding, while urlscan.io's brand detection matched the page to Coinbase, which is the basis of our classification.
Evidence
Ten of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain as of 2026-09-25, among them ESET, Kaspersky, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Gridinsoft and SOCRadar. That is a modest count, but it comes from several unrelated vendors. urlscan.io rated the page malicious. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL as phishing, and it is blocked by MetaMask and SEAL in addition to PhishDestroy. Four AlienVault OTX threat pulses reference it, so other researchers tracked it independently.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered through GoDaddy.com, LLC on 2026-09-14, and PhishDestroy caught it the next day, which points to a short-lived site set up for immediate use. It was hosted on the HOSTKEY B.V. network in the Netherlands. It carried a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the browser padlock only meant the connection was encrypted and said nothing about whether the site was really Coinbase.
What to do
If you entered credentials on cionbase.xyz, change your Coinbase password immediately, along with any other account that uses the same password. Reset two-factor authentication, preferably moving to an authenticator app or a hardware key, and review your active sessions, recent withdrawals and address whitelist for anything you do not recognise. If you shared a seed phrase, move your funds to a new wallet right away, because the old one should be treated as compromised. Defenders should block the domain and use its name pattern to hunt for sibling Coinbase typosquats registered around the same date.
