Its page title copies that government address word for word. It targets Indian citizens, registrars and agents who use the portal to file or download civil records. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-29. As of 2026-10-19 the domain still resolves, but the page content is unreachable.
How the scam works
The address is built as a disguise. The genuine government hostname is placed at the front, but the domain that actually controls the site is viewcart.life, an unrelated commercial name. Someone who skims the start of the link sees a familiar .gov.in address and assumes it is official. Fake portals of this kind usually ask for login credentials, Aadhaar or other identity details, and sometimes a fee to issue or correct a birth or death certificate. Victims can lose access to their portal accounts, hand over personal data that can be used for identity fraud, and pay for documents that never arrive.
Evidence
On 2026-10-03, 14 of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain. Detecting vendors include BitDefender, CRDF, ESET, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, G-Data, Gridinsoft and Kaspersky. These are independent engines from several security companies, which gives solid outside support for the phishing classification. The domain is also on the PhishDestroy blocklist.
Infrastructure
The viewcart.life domain was registered through GoDaddy.com, LLC on 2024-08-01, more than two years before PhishDestroy detected this hostname. That gap suggests an older or repurposed domain was used to host the government lookalike, rather than a domain registered for this campaign. The site runs on OVH SAS infrastructure in Canada at 54.39.160.85. It has a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the browser padlock only means the connection is encrypted and says nothing about whether the site is genuine.
What to do
If you entered a username or password on this page, change your password on the real CRS portal right away, along with any account that uses the same password, and turn on two-factor authentication where it is available. If you submitted Aadhaar, phone or address details, watch for unexpected OTPs and calls that pretend to come from officials. If you paid a fee, contact your bank or UPI provider to dispute the payment. Before entering anything on a .gov.in site, check that the address actually ends in gov.in.
