Bulletproof hosting

Bulletproof hosting is a hosting or domain service that knowingly ignores abuse reports, so phishing and malware sites stay online after they are reported.

How it works

Providers advertise tolerance for spam, phishing or piracy, operate from jurisdictions with weak enforcement and reply to complaints with delays, demands for court orders or no reply at all.

The same idea applies to registrars that leave clearly abusive domains active despite evidence.

How to protect yourself

  • Escalate unanswered reports to the upstream provider, the registry and, for gTLD registrars, ICANN Compliance.
  • Block network ranges and registrars that persistently host abuse.
