PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

coinbase.com.bayern is a phishing domain that impersonates Coinbase and targets people who hold accounts on the exchange. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-03. As of 2026-10-19 the site is still alive and responds with a redirect, so the address remains active and can send visitors elsewhere.

How the scam works

The trick is in the name. The domain begins with "coinbase.com", and the real ending, the German regional extension ".bayern", sits where many readers never look, especially in a shortened mobile address bar. Impersonation pages like this copy the exchange's sign-in flow to capture email, password and one-time 2FA codes, which attackers replay at once to log in and withdraw balances. The page title shows only "com.bayern" with no Coinbase branding, but the domain name itself is built around the Coinbase brand, which is the basis for our classification.

Evidence

On VirusTotal, 13 of 89 engines flag the domain as of 2026-09-16, including ChainPatrol, BitDefender, Chong Lua Dao, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, G-Data and Google Safe Browsing. Google Safe Browsing classes it as SOCIAL_ENGINEERING, which triggers warnings in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Beyond PhishDestroy, the domain appears on the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists, both run by crypto-security teams.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2024-10-21 through Dynadot Inc, almost two years before PhishDestroy detected it. That long gap suggests it was registered early and held until it was needed. It resolves to 103.224.182.251 on the Trellian Pty. Limited network in the US. Its Let's Encrypt certificate gives it a padlock icon, and a padlock alone proves nothing about who runs a site.

What to do

If you typed your Coinbase password on this site, change it immediately from the official app. Then reset 2FA, preferring a hardware key or authenticator app over SMS, and sign out all other active sessions. Review recent logins, withdrawals, whitelisted addresses and API keys, and contact Coinbase support at once if anything looks unfamiliar. Reuse of that password anywhere else should be changed as well. Defenders should block the domain and IP, and watch mail and chat traffic for brand-prefixed lookalikes that pair "coinbase.com" with an unrelated extension.

How do phishing scams typically work?
