PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

instagram-cyber.github.io is an impersonation phishing page that posed as Instagram to lure the platform's users into handing over account access. It ran as a free GitHub Pages project, with the brand name placed up front in the subdomain to look official at a glance. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-09-06. The site went offline on 2026-09-11 and was still dead with an empty root on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

Pages like this copy Instagram's look and ask visitors to sign in, often under a pretext such as a security check, copyright warning or verification badge offer. Whatever is typed into the form goes to the operator, who can then take over the account, lock out the owner, message their contacts or resell the profile. The page title now reads "Site not found · GitHub Pages" because the project was removed, while our classification reflects the Instagram impersonation detected while it was live.

Evidence

Seventeen of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the address on 2026-09-16. They include BitDefender, ESET, Fortinet, Emsisoft, G-Data, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, alphaMountain.ai and the Vietnamese anti-scam group Chong Lua Dao, which makes it a broad cross-vendor consensus rather than a single outlier. Google Safe Browsing lists it under social engineering. urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict and recognized Instagram branding on the page. Phishunt and PhishFeed carry it alongside PhishDestroy.

Infrastructure

The operator registered no domain. The page sat on a github.io subdomain, so GitHub, Inc. is the registrar of record and the content was delivered through Fastly's network in the US, the standard setup for any GitHub Pages site. Free hosting like this costs nothing and can be replaced within minutes, which matches the short lifespan here: about five days between first detection and the page going dark.

What to do

If you entered your Instagram username and password on this page, change the password immediately, plus any other account that reuses it. Turn on two-factor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app, and review the active sessions and login activity in Instagram's security settings to log out unknown devices. Also check that the email address and phone number on the account are still yours, and change the email password too if it matched. Defenders should block the subdomain, watch for new github.io projects that use Instagram's name, and report lookalikes to GitHub so they are removed quickly.
