PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

coingeckoko.com is an impersonation phishing site built on a misspelling of CoinGecko, the widely used cryptocurrency price and market-data tracker. The doubled "ko" is designed to catch people who mistype the real name or skim a link in a chat or search ad. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-10-10, and it was still online with live content when checked on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

Lookalike domains of trusted crypto tools borrow the brand's credibility so that visitors drop their guard and follow prompts to log in, connect a wallet, or claim a listing, airdrop or reward. Anything typed or signed on such a page goes to the operator, which can mean a hijacked account or a wallet approval that lets tokens be pulled out. The live page carries the title "太阳城" (Sun City), a name associated with Chinese-language gambling sites, while we classify the domain as CoinGecko impersonation.

Evidence

Nine of 92 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain on 2026-10-16, among them Kaspersky, BitDefender, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, G-Data, CRDF, Gridinsoft and alphaMountain.ai. That count is modest, but the vendors span independent detection stacks rather than one shared feed. MetaMask and SEAL list the domain alongside PhishDestroy, which means many wallet users get a warning before the page loads. Three AlienVault OTX threat pulses also reference it, so other researchers have tracked it as well.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered through Namecheap on 2026-10-08, only two days before PhishDestroy caught it. That short gap fits a freshly stood-up lookalike rather than a long-running site. It resolves to Zenlayer hosting in Hong Kong, which matches the Chinese-language page title.

What to do

If you entered a CoinGecko or exchange password on this site, change it at once, enable app-based 2FA, and change any other account that reused that password. If you connected a wallet or signed anything, revoke token approvals with a trusted approval checker and move remaining funds to a fresh wallet if you approved unlimited spending. Reach CoinGecko only by typing its correct name or using a saved bookmark. Defenders should block coingeckoko.com at DNS and the web proxy, add CoinGecko typosquat patterns to their monitoring, and warn users who trade or track tokens.
