How the scam works
Recovery scams target people at their most desperate, right after a loss, by posing as a helpline, legal counsel or investigative body that can trace and return stolen crypto. The usual next step is a request for an upfront payment, described as a fee, a tax, a deposit or a "verification" transfer, before any funds are released. Many of these schemes also collect ID documents and details of the original theft, and some ask for wallet access or seed phrases. No money is ever recovered. The victim loses a second sum and often hands over personal data that can be reused in later fraud.
Evidence
On 2026-09-29, 7 of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain: alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, Kaspersky and SOCRadar.
