PhishDestroy threat report
metaext.pro is a phishing page impersonating MetaMask and aimed at people who use the wallet's browser extension. The name reads like shorthand for a MetaMask extension download or update page. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-09-18, and it went offline the next day, 2026-09-19. As of 2026-10-19 the domain no longer resolves in DNS.
Fake MetaMask sites usually present a convincing "restore," "verify" or "update extension" screen. They ask the visitor for the 12- or 24-word secret recovery phrase, or prompt them to install a counterfeit extension. Anyone who hands over the phrase gives the attacker full control of the wallet, and the funds can be moved out within minutes. When last checked, the page carried the title "Not Acceptable!", which reads like a server error rather than wallet branding, while our classification is MetaMask impersonation.
urlscan.io rated the site malicious and recognized MetaMask branding on it, which directly supports the impersonation finding. On VirusTotal, 4 of 89 engines flagged the domain as of 2026-09-19: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Gridinsoft and SOCRadar. That count is low, which is typical for a domain caught within weeks of going live. The domain also appears in 4 AlienVault OTX threat pulses and is listed on the PhishDestroy blocklist.
The domain was registered through Spaceship, Inc. on 2026-08-21, 28 days before PhishDestroy flagged it. It stopped responding a day after detection, consistent with a short-lived phishing domain. It was hosted at 162.241.85.94 on Unified Layer's network (UNIFIEDLAYER-AS-1) in the United States.
If you typed your MetaMask recovery phrase into this site, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh phrase on a trusted device and move any remaining assets to it immediately. If you installed an extension from this page, remove it and scan the machine, and review and revoke token approvals on the old wallet with a reputable approval checker. Only install MetaMask from your browser's official extension store, and remember that MetaMask never asks for your recovery phrase. Defenders should block the domain and its hosting IP, and search proxy and DNS logs from 2026-08-21 onward for visits that may indicate exposed users.
