PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

walletupdate.us is an impersonation phishing page aimed at cryptocurrency wallet users. Its name is built around the idea of a mandatory wallet update. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-10-09. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving live content, so it remains a working threat.

How the scam works

Fake wallet-update pages use a familiar lure: an urgent notice says your wallet must be updated, verified or resynced, or you will lose access. The victim is then asked to type in their recovery phrase or private key, or to connect their wallet and sign a request. Either one gives the operators control over the funds. Once a seed phrase is handed over, attackers can empty the wallet from any device, and the theft cannot be reversed. The page currently shows the generic title "One moment, please..." rather than branded wallet content, while our classification is impersonation phishing.

Evidence

Nine of 92 VirusTotal engines flag the domain as malicious as of 2026-10-19. The named vendors include alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar, URLQuery and VIPRE. That is a minority of engines, but it is a varied mix of commercial and threat-intel sources. The stronger signal comes from the crypto-focused blocklists: besides PhishDestroy, the domain is listed by MetaMask and by SEAL, two sources dedicated to wallet-targeting fraud. It also appears in four AlienVault OTX threat pulses, so other researchers have tracked it independently.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-02-18 through DYNADOT LLC, almost eight months before we detected it. This suggests it was either held in reserve or used quietly before this campaign surfaced. It is hosted on the Webhosting Holdings LLC network in the Netherlands. The certificate comes from Let's Encrypt, so the padlock in the browser says nothing about whether the site is legitimate.

What to do

Do not enter anything on walletupdate.us; real wallet providers never ask for your recovery phrase to perform an update. If you typed in a seed phrase or private key, assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet on a clean device and move any remaining assets to it right away. If you connected a wallet or signed a transaction, review and revoke token approvals with a reputable approval checker, and watch the address for unexpected transfers. Defenders should block the domain and its hosting IP at DNS and proxy level, and alert users that wallet-update notices are a common phishing pretext.
