rufus.im impersonated Rufus, the free open-source utility for creating bootable USB drives, under the page title "Rufus Download for Windows". It targeted people searching for the tool, often IT staff and hobbyists who install operating systems. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-21. The site has been offline since 2026-10-06, and on 2026-10-19 it was still down with no malicious content served.
How the scam works
Rufus is distributed only through its official project site, so a lookalike domain offering a "Rufus Download for Windows" lets an operator hand visitors a file that only appears to be the genuine tool. Look-alike download pages for popular utilities commonly bundle a working copy of the program with hidden malware, such as an information stealer that harvests saved browser passwords, session cookies and crypto wallet files. Because the real program still runs, victims rarely notice anything is wrong. Inclusion on the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists points to crypto users and their wallets as a likely target.
