PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

ext-coinbais-us.wasmer.app is an impersonation phishing page posing as Coinbase. It was built to look like the getting-started page for the Coinbase Wallet browser extension. The hostname uses the misspelling "coinbais" to pass a quick glance from people searching for the extension. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-09-13, and it went offline the same day. It was still dead with no content at the root when rechecked on 2026-10-19.

How the scam works

The page title reads "Coinbase Walelt Extension® | Getting™ Started | Coinbase®". The typo in "Walelt" and the scattered trademark symbols are typical of cloned onboarding pages. Fake extension setup pages like this usually walk the visitor through a convincing "restore" or "connect" step that asks for the wallet's secret recovery phrase. Some push a counterfeit extension download instead. Anyone who types a recovery phrase into such a page hands over full control of that wallet, and the funds can be moved out with no way to reverse it.

Evidence

On 2026-09-13, 18 of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the site. ChainPatrol, a crypto-focused scanner, was among them, along with alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, ESET, Emsisoft, Fortinet, G-Data and Google Safe Browsing. Google Safe Browsing categorizes it as SOCIAL_ENGINEERING. urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict and recognized Coinbase branding on the page. The site is listed on the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The page sat on a subdomain of wasmer.app, an app-hosting platform registered through Wasmer. The 2018-10-16 registration date belongs to that parent domain, so the domain's age says nothing about when this page was created. Using a shared platform let the operator borrow an established domain instead of registering one. The server address resolves to the Scaleway SAS network in France.

What to do

If you entered a recovery phrase or private key on this page, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet from a fresh phrase on a trusted device, and move any remaining assets to it immediately. If you connected a wallet or approved anything, revoke those token approvals with a reputable approval checker. If you installed an extension from this page, remove it and get Coinbase Wallet only from the official browser extension store listing. Security teams should block the hostname, watch for similar misspelled Coinbase lookalikes on app-hosting platforms, and report new copies to the hosting provider.
