softonicmacs.org is an impersonation phishing site whose name trades on Softonic, the well-known software download portal, with a "macs" twist aimed at Apple users hunting for free applications. Its page title reads "SadeemPC", the name of a different software download site, while we classify the domain as impersonation based on the brand it borrows. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-09-27, and it was still alive on 2026-10-19.
How the scam works
Sites like this sit between a user and the software they want. They promise free or unlocked Mac apps under a trusted download brand, then hand over an installer that is not what it claims to be. In this scheme the typical payload is malware, often an information stealer that collects browser passwords, session cookies, keychain data and crypto wallet files. Some versions also push fake sign-in or "verification" prompts to capture credentials directly. The victim may lose account access, saved passwords and any crypto held in software wallets on the infected machine.
Evidence
Five of 92 VirusTotal engines flag the domain as of 2026-10-10. The flags come from alphaMountain.ai, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar and VIPRE. That is a small but varied group of reputation and threat-intel vendors, and most engines have not yet caught up. Four AlienVault OTX pulses reference the domain, which shows other researchers are tracking it. Among blocklists, it currently appears only on PhishDestroy.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered on 2026-06-03, nearly four months before PhishDestroy detected it. A brand-themed name left idle for months before use fits a planned operation. Registration and hosting both run through Cloudflare, Inc., with the serving IP geolocated to Canada. Because Cloudflare fronts the site, the actual origin server is hidden from casual inspection.
What to do
Do not run anything downloaded from this site. If you already did, disconnect the Mac from the network and scan it with a reputable anti-malware tool. If possible, reinstall macOS from a clean source. From a different, clean device, change your passwords, starting with email, Apple ID, banking and exchange accounts, then turn on two-factor authentication and sign out of all active sessions. If a software wallet lived on that machine, treat its seed phrase as exposed and move funds to a new wallet created on a clean device. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and hunt for recent Mac installer downloads that came from it.
