The victim is offered an APK file to sideload, which bypasses the app store's vetting, so whatever the operator packages runs on the phone with the permissions the user grants. Fake builds of social media mods can harvest the Instagram login entered into the app, capture session data, or carry additional malware. The usual losses are a hijacked Instagram account and a compromised Android device.
