PhishDestroy threat report
variatiponal.io is an impersonation phishing page that presented itself under the title "Service Status". It mimicked the look of a routine infrastructure or service notice. urlscan.io matched it to a generic Cloudflare-style template. Its listing by MetaMask, SEAL and ChainPatrol points to crypto wallet users as the intended audience. PhishDestroy first saw it on 2026-08-14. The site has been offline since 2026-09-16, and on our last check on 2026-10-19 its DNS was no longer resolving.
Fake status pages work by borrowing the authority of an outage or verification notice. The visitor is told a service is degraded or that they must complete a check to continue. They are then steered into an action that benefits the attacker, such as entering credentials, typing a recovery phrase or connecting a wallet and approving a request. Because the page looks like neutral system messaging rather than a login form, victims tend to drop their guard. Anyone who complied risks losing account access or the funds the wallet controls.
On 2026-09-15, 13 of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain, including ChainPatrol, alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, Chong Lua Dao, CRDF, ESET, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker and Fortinet. That is a modest count, but it combines crypto-specific and mainstream security vendors. urlscan.io rendered a malicious verdict. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL as phishing. Beyond PhishDestroy, it appears on the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists, and three AlienVault OTX pulses reference it.
The domain was registered on 2026-08-11 through GNAME.COM PTE. LTD. and was already serving its phishing page when we caught it three days later. That short gap fits a disposable domain stood up for a single campaign. Traffic ran through Cloudflare, with the edge address geolocated to Canada, so the real origin server stays hidden. The site went dark the day after its last VirusTotal check, consistent with an operation that abandons domains once detection builds.
If you connected a wallet to this page, review and revoke any token approvals or permissions you granted, and move remaining assets to a fresh wallet. If you typed a recovery phrase, treat that wallet as compromised and empty it immediately. If you entered a password, change it everywhere it was reused and enable app-based 2FA. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and search logs for past visits around 2026-08-14 to 2026-09-16. They should also warn users that genuine services never ask for seed phrases or wallet connections on a status page.
