PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

tetherscan.onrender.com is an impersonation phishing page that borrows Tether's name and presents itself as Tether Web3 | USDT Verifier. It targets people holding USDT who can be convinced their tokens need checking or validating. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-01. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and answering visitors with a redirect.

How the scam works

Tether does not offer a web tool that verifies your USDT. A fake USDT verifier exists to get a victim to act on their own wallet. Pages of this kind usually ask the visitor to connect a wallet and sign an approval, or to type in a recovery phrase, under the pretext of a balance check or compliance scan. Either step can hand the attacker control over the victim's USDT and potentially other assets in the same wallet. The name tetherscan adds false credibility by echoing the familiar block-explorer naming style.

Evidence

On 2026-10-16, five of 92 VirusTotal engines flagged the site: alphaMountain.ai, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft and PhishFort. That count is modest. PhishFort's verdict carries weight because the vendor specializes in crypto-brand phishing. ScamSniffer, a Web3-focused scam feed, lists the site independently alongside PhishDestroy.

Infrastructure

The page runs as a subdomain on Render's application hosting platform, served from US infrastructure. The 2015-03-28 registration date and the registrar Render Services Inc. belong to the shared onrender.com platform domain, not to this operation. Those details do not show when the scam page was created. Free platform subdomains like this can be deployed in minutes, and the Google Trust Services certificate comes with the platform automatically, so the padlock proves nothing about legitimacy.

What to do

If you connected a wallet to this page, review and revoke any token approvals it obtained, starting with USDT allowances. If you entered a recovery phrase, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet and move any remaining funds there immediately. Do not pay any fee the site or its contacts later demand to unlock or verify funds. Defenders should block the hostname and report it to Render's abuse channel so the deployment is removed while it remains live.

Questions about tetherscan.onrender.com

Is tetherscan.onrender.com legit?

No. PhishDestroy classifies tetherscan.onrender.com as a Google impersonation page (risk: critical, 83/100); it was first detected on 2026-09-01. VirusTotal: 5/92 engines flag it. Treat the site as unsafe.

Is tetherscan.onrender.com safe to connect a wallet?

No. Do not connect a wallet, sign messages or approve tokens on tetherscan.onrender.com. Phishing sites ask for approvals (approve, setApprovalForAll, Permit2) that let the operator move your assets, and a confirmed transaction cannot be reversed.

What should I do if I used tetherscan.onrender.com?

Recommendations & Advice for Victims

Choose the steps that match what you shared. Keep a copy of this report alongside your own records.

What should I do immediately?

Urgent

Stop using the suspicious site. Open the real service through its official app or an address you already trust.

  • Change all passwords — email, exchange accounts, anything that shares the same password
  • Enable 2FA using an authenticator app (not SMS). Disable SMS-based recovery
  • Freeze cards if you entered banking details on the phishing site

What information should I collect for my report?

FBI guidelines

Keep original emails, receipts, messages and screenshots in a secure place. A factual timeline helps the receiving authority understand what happened. IC3 evidence guidance ↗

  • Payment records — if you paid, save the receipt, amount, date, payment provider and recipient details.
  • Exact dates & times — of each transaction and first contact with scammer
  • Screenshots — scam website, chat messages, emails, wallet transactions, social media
  • All URLs & domains used by the scammer (including tetherscan.onrender.com)
  • Communications — emails, texts, phone numbers, usernames the scammer used

Even if you don't have all details — file a report anyway. Partial information still helps investigations.

Where should I report the scam?

  • FBI IC3 — Internet Crime Complaint Center (US federal reporting)
  • Europol — European cybercrime reporting (EU)
  • Your bank or payment provider — contact its fraud team promptly through official contact details if money or card information was exposed.
  • Local police — creates an official record, even if they can't act immediately

A report is not a guarantee of recovery or investigation, but prompt, accurate transaction data can help authorities and service providers trace the incident.

How do phishing scams typically work?

  • Fake websites — pixel-perfect clones of legitimate sites with slightly altered domains
  • Pig butchering — trust built over weeks via Telegram/WhatsApp/dating apps, then money stolen
  • Recovery scams — fraudsters pose as recovery agents and demand upfront fees. Never share a seed phrase or pay before independently verifying the provider
  • AI-powered scams — deepfakes, automated phishing, and AI-generated sites making fraud harder to detect

How can I protect myself in the future?

  • Bookmark official sites — never click links from emails, DMs, or ads
  • Verify domains — check on PhishDestroy before interacting. Check HTTPS, spelling, domain age
  • "Too good to be true" = scam — guaranteed returns, celebrity endorsements, urgent deadlines
