PhishDestroy threat report
bigmatmaltadirect.shop is an impersonation phishing site that presents itself as the Maltese branch of BigMat, the building-materials retail brand, under the page title "BigMat in Malta | BigMat Malta". It targets customers in Malta shopping for hardware, tools and construction supplies. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-10-16. As of 2026-10-19, the site was still online and serving its storefront content.
Sites like this copy a real retailer's name and look, then add a "direct" style domain that suggests an official outlet or a clearance channel. Visitors find attractive prices, fill a basket and go to a checkout that collects their name, delivery address, phone number and payment card details. The order never arrives. The victim loses the money paid, and the stolen card and personal data can be reused for further fraud or targeted follow-up scams. The .shop domain is unrelated to BigMat's genuine web presence, which is the clearest warning sign.
urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict and specifically flagged the site as a fake shop. On VirusTotal, only 1 of 92 engines flags it so far (Gridinsoft, checked 2026-10-16), so most security products will not yet warn visitors. The domain appears on the PhishDestroy blocklist and is referenced in 4 AlienVault OTX pulses.
The domain was registered on 2026-04-27 through Dynadot Inc., several months before it was detected. It resolves to 31.222.234.249 on the Malakmadze Web LLC network, which is registered in Georgia, while the IP geolocates to the United States. The site uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate (YE1). The padlock only means the connection is encrypted. It does not mean the shop is legitimate.
Do not place orders or enter any details on this site. If you paid by card, contact your bank right away to block the card, dispute the charge and request a replacement. If you used PayPal or a similar service, open a claim there. Watch for unexpected calls, texts or emails that mention your order, because the scammers now hold your contact details. Buy BigMat products only through the retailer's verified channels or by contacting the store directly. Defenders should block the domain and its IP at DNS, proxy and mail gateways and report it to the registrar and hosting provider. They should also alert BigMat so the company can pursue a takedown and warn its customers.
