Text Hash Generator

Runs locally

Use Text Hash Generator

What it does

Get the SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 hex digest of a piece of text, encoded as UTF-8. To hash a file such as an attachment or a phishing kit archive, use File Hash Calculator.

It runs entirely in your browser: nothing you enter is uploaded.

Example

FIPS 180 test vector

Input
abc
Output (captured 2026-10-20)
ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad

SHA-256 gives ba7816bf…f20015ad (64 hex characters), the published test value; choose SHA-1 to get a9993e36…9cd0d89d.

FAQ

Why doesn't my hash match another tool's?

The text is hashed as UTF-8 exactly as it is in the box, so a trailing newline, an extra space or different line endings change the result completely. Hashing pasted text is not the same as hashing the file it came from; use File Hash Calculator for files.

Is SHA-1 still safe, and why is there no MD5?

SHA-1 is broken for collisions (practical attacks since 2017), so use it only to match existing IOC hashes, not for new security uses. MD5 is not offered because the browser's Web Crypto API, which this tool uses, does not support it.

Is the text uploaded?

No. Hashing runs in your browser with crypto.subtle.digest and nothing is sent anywhere. A hash is a one-way fingerprint, not encryption, so it cannot be turned back into the text.
