PhishDestroy threat report
This GitHub Pages site posed as Instagram and used a click-bait name promising funny, viral Reels to pull in Instagram users. PhishDestroy first detected it on 2026-09-06. It went offline on 2026-09-11 and was still dead when last checked on 2026-10-19. Visitors now get only GitHub's default "Site not found" page, which reflects the takedown, not the content the site served while it was live.
Lures like this spread through direct messages, comments and shared links that promise entertaining Reels. The victim lands on a page styled like Instagram that asks them to log in to watch. Anything typed into that form goes to the operator, not to Instagram. A stolen account is then used to post the same lure to the victim's followers, to run scams in their name, or to demand payment for its return. A github.io address looks harmless and skips the cost of buying a domain, which is why free hosting is popular for these short-lived pages.
Sixteen of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the site when it was checked on 2026-09-16. They include BitDefender, ESET, Fortinet, G-Data, Emsisoft, Criminal IP, alphaMountain.ai and Google Safe Browsing, a broad spread of independent vendors rather than one outlier. Google Safe Browsing lists it under SOCIAL_ENGINEERING, the category for deceptive pages that trick users into handing over information. Beyond PhishDestroy, the site appears on the Phishunt and PhishFeed blocklists.
The site was a subdomain on GitHub's free Pages service, so no domain was registered and GitHub, Inc. is listed as registrar. It resolved to 185.199.108.153 on the Fastly, Inc. network in the US, which is shared GitHub Pages infrastructure, so the address does not single out this operator. The page went down five days after PhishDestroy first saw it, a typical lifespan for throwaway phishing pages on free hosts.
If you entered your Instagram login on this page, change your password right away, and change it on any other service where you reused it. Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app. Then review your active sessions and log out any devices you don't recognize. Check whether your account sent the lure to your contacts, warn them if it did, and use Instagram's account recovery if you are already locked out. Defenders should block the hostname, look in proxy and mail logs for users who visited it between 2026-09-06 and 2026-09-11, and reset credentials for anyone who did.
