PhishDestroy threat report
cathaybank.cathab.com was an impersonation phishing page posing as the online banking portal of Cathay Bank. The address puts the real bank name in front of a lookalike domain, cathab.com, so a quick glance reads as legitimate. It targeted Cathay Bank customers. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-06, and the site has been offline since 2026-09-11, with its DNS still inactive at our last check on 2026-10-19.
The page carried the title "Catay Bank || Future Assured Online Banking with Secured and reliable features". The bank's name is misspelled, which is a useful giveaway for anyone who saw it. Pages like this copy a bank's login screen and collect whatever the visitor types, usually username and password, and often one-time codes or personal details used to pass security checks. With those, the operators can log into the real account, move money or reuse the identity. The victim loses control of the account and possibly its balance.
urlscan.io rated the page malicious and recognised Cathay Bank as the imitated brand, which directly supports the impersonation classification. On VirusTotal, 6 of 89 engines flagged it as of 2026-09-08: alphaMountain.ai, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, Netcraft and SOCRadar. That is a low count for a site already removed, so most security tools would not have blocked it during its short run. PhishDestroy lists it on its own blocklist.
The domain was registered through Namecheap on 2026-08-24, just 13 days before we detected it, and the site went dark five days after detection. That fits a throwaway phishing setup built to run for a few weeks at most. It was hosted on the OVH network in France and used a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the padlock in the browser said nothing about whether the site was genuine.
If you entered Cathay Bank login details on this page, change your online banking password right away from the bank's official app or a bookmarked address. Contact Cathay Bank through the number on your card or statement, report the phishing, and ask them to review recent logins and transfers. If you typed a one-time code, card number or personal identifiers, tell the bank specifically so it can watch for account takeover and identity fraud. Use the same password anywhere else? Change it there too, and turn on two-factor authentication. Defenders should block the cathab.com domain and its subdomains and watch mail and web logs for misspelled "Catay Bank" lures.
