PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

safepal-io.net is an impersonation phishing domain posing as SafePal, the crypto wallet brand, and aimed at its users. The hyphenated "-io" name is designed to pass for an official SafePal address at a glance. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-13. The site has been offline since 2026-09-24, and on 2026-10-19 its DNS was no longer resolving.

How the scam works

Fake SafePal sites usually copy the wallet's look and push visitors to "verify", "sync" or "restore" a wallet. They do this by typing in the 12- or 24-word recovery phrase or by connecting the wallet and signing a request. Either step gives the attacker control of the funds, and transfers made this way cannot be reversed. The last page title served was a "502: Bad gateway" error, so the domain was not displaying working content at that point, even though we classify it as SafePal impersonation.

Evidence

On 2026-09-22, five of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain: CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar and VIPRE. That count is low, so many security tools would not have warned a visitor. Wallet-focused defenses did better. MetaMask's blocklist and SEAL both list the domain alongside PhishDestroy, which means MetaMask users would see a warning before interacting. It also appears in six AlienVault OTX threat pulses.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-05 through Hosting Concepts B.V. (Registrar.eu), eight days before PhishDestroy caught it. That short gap is typical of brand-impersonation domains that are registered and put to use quickly. Traffic ran through Cloudflare, with the edge address located in Canada. This setup hides the real origin server. The site stayed live for about eleven days after first detection before going dark.

What to do

If you entered your SafePal recovery phrase on this site, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh phrase on a trusted device and move any remaining assets immediately. If you connected a wallet or signed anything, review and revoke token approvals with a reputable approval checker and watch for unexpected transactions. Only reach SafePal through its official app or a bookmarked address, and remember that no genuine support flow ever asks for your recovery phrase. Defenders should block the domain and look for lookalike "safepal-" registrations that may follow the same pattern.
