How the scam works
The "x" added to the brand name makes the domain look official at a glance in search results or shared links. Fake VPN download portals like this usually push a tampered installer in place of the real app, or route visitors to a sign-in prompt that collects Proton account credentials. Victims who install such a client risk handing the operator control of their device and everything typed on it. A VPN is meant to protect privacy, so a fake one can expose the very traffic and accounts the user wanted to shield.
Evidence
On 2026-09-29, 14 of 91 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain, including alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, CyRadar, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, G-Data and Gridinsoft. That count is moderate, but it comes from several unrelated vendors. urlscan.io returned a malicious verdict and matched the page to the Proton brand family under its ProtonMail label. The domain also appears on the MetaMask and SEAL blocklists alongside PhishDestroy, and one AlienVault OTX threat pulse references it.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered on 2026-07-31 through Realtime Register B.V., about seven weeks before PhishDestroy detected it. A gap like that leaves time to build the page and seed links before it draws attention. The site sits behind Cloudflare, Inc. on an address geolocated to Canada, which hides the actual origin server.
