It targets people comparing or enrolling in health plans who may take a plausible-sounding domain for the real insurer. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-12, and as of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving its content.
How the scam works
The page presents itself as "Affordable Health Insurance: Shop & Compare Plans | Ambetter," which matches the insurer's real marketing. Insurance lookalikes like this lure visitors into a quote or enrollment flow that asks for the details a real application needs, such as name, date of birth, address, income, Social Security number, existing policy information, login credentials or payment card data. The victim loses that identity and payment information, which can be used for identity theft, fraudulent charges, or follow-up calls and messages that pose as an agent to push fake premiums.
Evidence
On 2026-09-20, 15 of 89 VirusTotal engines flagged the domain. They include BitDefender, ESET, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, G-Data, alphaMountain.ai, CyRadar and Gridinsoft. Several major endpoint and web-filtering vendors reached the same verdict independently. The domain also appears in five AlienVault OTX threat pulses, so other researchers are tracking it as well. Beyond our own blocklist, it is not yet widely listed, and many browsers and filters may still let it load without warning.
Infrastructure
The domain was registered on 2024-08-07 through TUCOWS.COM, CO., more than two years before PhishDestroy detected it. That age can help it slip past filters that distrust newly created domains. It runs on Google LLC cloud infrastructure in the US and uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate. The browser padlock only means the connection is encrypted. It says nothing about whether the site actually belongs to Ambetter.
What to do
If you entered personal details on this site, treat your identity as exposed. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the credit bureaus, and watch for unexpected accounts or insurance claims in your name.
