Overview

steam-rips.com is an impersonation phishing page that trades on the Steam brand and presents itself as "STEAMRIP » Free Pre-installed Steam Games." It targets PC gamers looking for free downloads of Steam titles, a group that tends to trust anything carrying Steam's name. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-10-07. When last checked on 2026-10-19, the site was still online and serving content.

How the scam works

The page title advertises a free game-download portal rather than a Steam login screen, while we classify the site as Steam impersonation phishing. Schemes like this use the promise of free, pre-installed games to win a visitor's trust. They then route the visitor to a Steam-branded sign-in prompt or to a download, and a Steam login entered there goes straight to the operators. A hijacked account gives them its game library, inventory items and wallet balance, as well as any payment methods saved to it. Downloaded "game" files from such sites can also carry malware that steals saved logins.

Evidence

On 2026-10-19, VirusTotal showed 7 of 92 engines flagging the domain: alphaMountain.ai, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, Gridinsoft, SOCRadar, Sophos and VIPRE. That is a minority of engines, but it includes several established web-filtering vendors. Spamhaus lists the domain in its DBL with the phishing tag, which gives it independent confirmation outside the antivirus ecosystem. Two AlienVault OTX threat pulses also reference it, and it appears on the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-29 through NICENIC INTERNATIONAL GROUP CO., LIMITED. PhishDestroy detected it just eight days later, which fits a freshly built lure rather than an established site. It sits behind Cloudflare, so the visible address in Canada belongs to Cloudflare's network and does not show where the real server is.

What to do

If you signed in to Steam through this site, change your Steam password immediately and turn on Steam Guard with the mobile authenticator. Also review Steam's authorized devices and log out all other sessions. If you downloaded and ran anything from it, scan the machine with a reputable antivirus tool. After that, change the passwords saved in your browser, starting with email and Steam. Check your Steam account for unfamiliar trades, market listings or purchases, and report any to Steam Support. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and the web proxy and alert users who may have visited it, especially gaming communities.
