PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

modernremotely.com presents itself as Shopee, the large online marketplace, and is aimed at the platform's buyers and sellers. The domain name has nothing to do with Shopee, which is a strong sign that the site does not belong to the brand it imitates. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-10-07. As of 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving its fake content.

How the scam works

The page carries the title "Shopee" and copies the brand's look so that visitors trust it as the real marketplace. Pages like this usually ask the victim to sign in, confirm an order or verify a payment. Whatever is typed in, including usernames, passwords, phone numbers, one-time codes or card details, goes straight to the operators. Stolen Shopee accounts can then be used for fraudulent purchases, to drain stored balances, or to scam the victim's contacts and customers.

Evidence

19 of 92 security engines on VirusTotal flagged the domain when it was checked on 2026-10-07. The vendors flagging it include BitDefender, ESET, Fortinet, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Emsisoft, alphaMountain.ai, ADMINUSLabs and the Vietnamese anti-fraud group Chong Lua Dao. urlscan.io rated the page malicious and specifically recognised Shopee branding on it. The domain also appears in four AlienVault OTX threat pulses, which means other researchers have tracked it independently. It is listed on the PhishDestroy blocklist.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-03-23 through TuringSign Inc. (Cosmotown), roughly six and a half months before it was detected. Domains are often kept dormant like this before a campaign starts. The site is hosted on Netsec Limited's network in Hong Kong. It uses a free Let's Encrypt certificate, so the padlock in the browser only means the connection is encrypted. It does not show that the site is genuine.

What to do

If you entered your Shopee login here, change your password right away through the official app. Do the same on any other service that uses the same password, and turn on two-factor authentication. If you entered card or bank details, contact your bank to block the card and dispute any charges you don't recognise. Check your Shopee order history, saved addresses and linked payment methods for changes you didn't make. Never share one-time codes sent to your phone. Security teams should block the domain at DNS and the proxy, and search mail and web logs for users who visited it. Reports to Shopee's brand-protection team help speed up the takedown.
