PhishDestroy threat report

Overview

luno-phl.com poses as Luno, the cryptocurrency exchange, under a page titled "APP download". The "phl" in the name looks aimed at Luno customers in a specific market, and the lure is a fake way to get the Luno app. PhishDestroy first flagged it on 2026-09-29. On 2026-10-19 the site was still online and serving its content.

How the scam works

Fake app-download pages copy an exchange's branding and offer a "mobile app" from outside the official stores. Visitors who follow the prompt either install a rogue application or are walked through a lookalike sign-in. That path is built to capture the Luno email, password, verification codes or recovery details. With those in hand, the operators can log into the real account and withdraw the victim's crypto and cash balances, which are usually unrecoverable once moved on-chain.

Evidence

urlscan.io rated the page malicious and recognised the Luno brand on it, which directly confirms the impersonation. On VirusTotal, 9 of 91 engines flagged the domain as of 2026-10-01. The flagging vendors include alphaMountain.ai, BitDefender, CRDF, Forcepoint ThreatSeeker, Fortinet, G-Data, Gridinsoft and Kaspersky. That is a modest share, but it comes from several unrelated vendors. The domain is also on the PhishDestroy, MetaMask and SEAL blocklists, so wallet users running those protections should get a warning.

Infrastructure

The domain was registered on 2026-09-27 through TuringSign Inc. d/b/a Cosmotown, just two days before it was detected. That quick turnaround is typical of throwaway phishing domains set up for a short campaign. Traffic runs through Cloudflare, Inc., with the address geolocated to Canada. That front end hides the server actually hosting the page. A free Let's Encrypt certificate supplies the padlock, so a secure connection says nothing about whether the site is genuine.

What to do

Do not install anything offered on luno-phl.com. Only get Luno's app from the official app stores or the company's own site. If you installed an app from this page, remove it and scan the device. If you entered login details, open the genuine Luno app and change your password. Then reset two-factor authentication, review recent activity and any saved withdrawal addresses, and contact Luno support to secure the account. Defenders should block the domain at DNS and proxy level and report it to Cloudflare and Cosmotown. They should also watch for sibling domains that pair the Luno name with country or app keywords.
